Gustav Traub was a landscape painter and graphic artist. In this latter capacity he made many illustrations for magazines and can be regarded as a chronicler of the life of his time. Traub studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Karlsruhe and later lived in Munich for many years. Here he provided illustrations for the 'Fliegenden Blätter', a satirical magazine, from 1918. Traub also made a lot of occasional graphics, such as ex-libris and menus. In 1939 he became a senior lecturer at the art academy in Munich. His work was regularly shown in the Münchener Glaspalast, an international platform for visual arts and crafts.
